Former Hattiesburg Public School Employee Indicted for Embezzling $22,000

April 6, 2010

JACKSON- Agents in the State Auditor’s Office arrested Kay Magee today following a Forrest County Grand Jury’s indictment on the charge of embezzlement.

Agents also presented Magee with a copy of a formal demand letter seeking civil recovery of $31,194.53, the total of principal funds, interest and investigative costs associated with the investigation.

Magee, 51, was employed with Hattiesburg School District beginning July 25, 2005. She resigned from the position on May 8, 2009. She was employed as the secretary for Hattiesburg High School from August 2007 to her resignation on May 8, 2009. The investigation alleges the embezzlement took place during her time as secretary of the high school.

“With the recent budget cuts affecting government agencies and school districts across the state, it is very disheartening to have an employee of one of our schools embezzle funds, ultimately taking money away from the children of Mississippi,” said State Auditor Stacey Pickering. “Kay Magee was indicted for embezzling funds from Hattiesburg School District, and the State Auditor’s Office also issued a demand against her today during her arrest in an effort to recover these funds as quickly as possible on behalf of the students and the school district.”

Since January 2008, the State Auditor’s Office has recovered over $3.6 million in embezzled, misspent or misappropriated funds. In addition, there are 59 individuals that have been indicted, and 53 individuals who have either pled guilty or been found guilty by a jury of their peers.
