November 18, 2008

JACKSON- Following a thorough investigation into missing funds at the Tate County School District, State Auditor Stacey Pickering has announced that he is returning over $30,000 to the District following the sentencing of Deborah Carol Shaw, 40, of Senatobia to 10 years in the Mississippi Department of Corrections, with four years suspended with six years to serve.

Shaw was also ordered to pay restitution and court costs.

“This case shows the diligence of the investigators in the State Auditor’s Office,” said State Auditor Stacey Pickering. The embezzlement took place from 2004 – 2007. Our investigators prepared the case, presented the evidence to the local district attorney who then took the case to a grand jury where Shaw was indicted on three counts of embezzlement. I am very pleased with the joint effort on behalf of the State Auditor’s Office and Tate County officials and pleased with the sentencing imposed by Judge Baker.”

Shaw served as the Food Services Director for the Tate County School District overseeing six school cafeterias. She will fulfill her sentence in a MDOC facility. Total funds embezzled were $27,152.94 and interest totaled $5,447.35.
