Q In a code charter municipality, does the mayor have the authority to declare his position as full-time or is it up to the board to make that decision?

A There is no real designation as full-time or part-time for a mayor. It is up to the individual serving as mayor to determine and devote the time necessary to fulfill the duties of the office. It is within the discretion of the governing board to determine and establish the mayor’s salary. If the board of aldermen determines that the duties and responsibilities of the mayor are not commensurate with the salary the individual is being paid, the authority exists to adjust the salary to reflect the work being performed.
