Q Is the sheriff’s office required to provide security free of charge for in-county events sponsored by an out-of-state company?

A No. The sheriff is not a security guard company and is not required to provide security to events free of charge. However, the sheriff has the statutory duty to keep the peace within his county, and may not charge a fee for doing so. It is within the sheriff’s discretion as to how to allocate and deploy the resources of the office. (Attorney General’s Opinion to Rasco dated March 5, 2010)
