Q Can a separate bank checking account be set up through a sheriff’s department for seized monies to be deposited so that these funds will be readily accessible for designated usage?

A No. However, a county board of supervisors may approve the establishment of a petty cash fund which may be placed in a bank account under the supervision of the sheriff. Such a petty
cash fund must be set up in full compliance with State Auditor’s Office policies and procedures concerning the operation and maintenance of a petty cash fund. (Attorney General’s Opinion to Barrett dated May 30, 1989)
