Q Can a sheriff assign a deputy to perform law enforcement duties on the educational property of a private nonprofit school located in the county?

A Yes. Pursuant to Section 19-25-67 it is the duty of every sheriff to keep the peace within his county, and that authority extends to private property. The sheriff may, with permission of the property owner, assign a deputy sheriff to enforce county ordinances and state statutes and provide for the safety and protection of citizens on educational property of a private nonprofit school.
