State Auditor Issues Demand Against Rankin County School District Employee For $16,000

June 30, 2014

JACKSON- State Auditor Stacey Pickering announced today that a demand has been issued against Melanie Harrell Garner, a Nurse Practitioner for the Rankin County School District.

The demand was issued on Friday, June 27, 2014, in the amount of $16,108.13. In 2012, State Auditor’s Office Investigators determined that Garner took numerous days off that were not reported on leave records. In addition to the demand, the RCSD Board credited Garner for more than 40 days of leave that she took in excess of those earned. The monetary value of the adjustment was $13,926.63.

During the course of its investigation, the Auditor’s Office discovered that despite being hired as a nurse practitioner, Garner never actually treated any patients. When the Auditor’s Office brought this to the attention of RCSD officials, the district responded that Garner was actually an administrator.
