State Auditor Issues Demand Against Former MS Department of Health Employee

September 11, 2015

Jackson, Miss – Special Agents from the State Auditor’s Office have arrested and served a demand for $3,671.10 to Kenyatta Smith, former Health Information Clerk for the Washington County Health Department. Smith was indicted on one count of embezzlement by a Washington County Grand Jury.

“There are many families in Mississippi who depend on the WIC program. It is unfortunate that people abuse the system when there are so many in need,” said State Auditor Stacey Pickering.

Smith, who began working with the Washington County Health Department in 2011, embezzled funds in the form of food products during the time period of December 2013 through January 2015. Evidence developed in this investigation shows that Smith entered a fictitious child into the WIC system and received food benefits 14 times over the course of 2 years.
